What it is
Is granite right for your kitchen?
Granite is a natural igneous stone, formed from grains of quartz and feldspar. It has been used to build with for thousands of years. Each slab carries its own color and movement.
Why people ask for it now
Granite never left. In Houzz’s 2022 study it was the second most chosen countertop, after quartz. What changed is the look: quieter granites in honed or leathered finishes, instead of the high-gloss speckled slabs of the 2000s.
What designers ask for
Designers like granite in a leathered finish: matte, lightly textured, with the veining up front. The texture also hides fingerprints. The finish is chosen when the slab is ordered, so see the slab or a sample first.
Why people choose it
- Natural stone, every slab one of a kind
- Hard and durable for daily kitchen use
- Wide range of colors, from near black to light
- Honed, polished or leathered finishes
How to care for it
- Many granites benefit from a sealer, and a good one lasts about 10 to 15 years
- Water test: if water darkens the stone instead of beading, ask about sealing
- Clean with mild soap and warm water
- Skip vinegar, ammonia and citrus cleaners, which wear down the sealer
- Use a trivet and a cutting board
Before we cut it
We design the layout of your slab.
We plan where every piece comes out of the slab, so the veins flow from one piece to the next and your countertops look right. Before we cut, we show you the layout.

Granite varies from slab to slab. We help you find the one you want, and before we cut, you see the layout.
- Want to see the slab in person? Go see it at one of our stone suppliers. We design the layout and cut it.
- Love a stone over budget? We show you one from the same family that costs less.
- Want a full-height backsplash? We install it in the same stone.
- Looking for a specific color? We help you find it, including remnants.
