What it is
Is porcelain right for your kitchen?
Porcelain is made from clay and minerals fired at very high heat. To be called porcelain, it has to absorb 0.5% water or less, which makes it close to waterproof. For countertops it comes in large, thin slabs, and on many slabs the pattern sits on the surface.
Why people ask for it now
Slabs are taking over the wall behind the counter, and porcelain makes them big. In the NKBA’s 2026 report, 75% of industry pros said slab backsplashes are gaining popularity. Some porcelain slabs come as large as 63 by 126 inches.
What designers ask for
Designers use porcelain when they want one continuous surface with very few seams. Most stop the backsplash at the cabinets or hood, and about 1 in 10 renovating homeowners take it to the ceiling (Houzz 2026).
Why people choose it
- Close to waterproof, so it resists stains
- Handles heat and resists scratches
- Color made to stand up to UV light
- Large slabs mean fewer seams
- No sealing needed
How to care for it
- Clean with water and a mild detergent, then dry
- Avoid oil-based cleaners and polishes: they can leave a film
- Never use products with hydrofluoric acid
- Protect the edges from hard knocks
- Ask whether your slab is through-body: on many slabs a chip shows plain material
Before we cut it
We design the layout of your slab.
We plan where every piece comes out of the slab, so the veins flow from one piece to the next and your countertops look right. Before we cut, we show you the layout.

Because the pattern is on the surface, every cut and every edge shows. Before we cut, you see where the veins go on your countertops.
- Want to see the slab in person? Go see it at one of our stone suppliers. We design the layout and cut it.
- Love a stone over budget? We show you one from the same family that costs less.
- Want a full-height backsplash? We install it in the same stone.
- Looking for a specific color? We help you find it, including remnants.
